So, I have about 130 gig of music clogging up my hard drive. As I am going through it (mediamonkey, random) I realize that I have never heard half of these songs in my life, and that I could delete half my catalog without knowing or caring. That, and so many songs I liked half a lifetime ago are just absolute shit.

I still have most of the mp3s I listened to back in middle school. They sit in a dark folder I only visit when I really hate myself (or I'm really drunk).

Funny you should mention that, as I am listening to a Zune with almost 60 gigs of music that I haven't updated for the most part, in 3 years.

I once had over 3000 songs in my library, with only 400 of them on my phone. When I migrated my library to my new computer, I did it wrong and wound up losing all 3600 songs, save for the 400 or so on my phone.

I pretty much only listen to Spotify. They have almost everything, and if they don't, getting out that dusty MP3/CD/LP is a special occasion.

I found an old iPod of mine from 4 or so years ago. I had literally the worst taste in music.

One day I'm going to update my technology and be like you guys, for now I'll just be satisfied being more organized. I setup my library as deliberate directories and subdirectories and since its mirrored to all my cars, it has to be organized. This is my directory tree:
I intentionally set it up this way so I have to move files at least once a month, i.e., move stuff from "Last Month" to "Active Quarter", and "This Month" to "Last Month". Quarterly I create a new directory under "Older Top 40" for last quarter, i.e., "Older 2014 4Qtr." During this time, I usually run a few programs on the files to imbed album covers and correct the files internal data like genre, album, track, etc. so my player can sort, search and display as much as possible. Annually the Quarterly directories over 5 years old get combined into a single directory for the whole year. Just checked it, the oldest I have is 2004.

Back when I was a freshman in college(6 years ago), a friend went around and grabbed everyone's music (300 GB worth) and gave me a copy on my hard drive. I worked on it until about 1.5 years ago and if I remember, at that point, I had only cleared out 60 GB worth. And this doesn't include all the songs that I want to buy from the last six years...
